How ArtemiC™ works

Current research suggests that our immune systems may be the cause of the serious illness some patients experience after being infected with COVID-19. When the immune system overreacts, the effects can be deadly.

We have known since the SARS epidemic of 2003 that a significant number of deaths related to viral infection are due to a phenomenon known as the cytokine storm. This occurs when the replication of a virus in the body leads to an excessive inflammatory response. Cytokines are biological chemicals that are used to stimulate cellular pathways and communication between cells. Their main job is to signal the immune system to fight off an infection. For example, some cytokines help your blood clot, while others help make antibodies.

However, when an excess of the chemicals responsible for controlling your inflammatory response are released, a cytokine storm can occur, causing high levels of inflammation in their location in the body. This creates a cascade effect that can be extremely dangerous and, in some cases, even fatal.

It is now believed that the cytokine storm effect was partly responsible for the disproportionate number of deaths of healthy young adults in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, as well as for deaths from the H5N1 bird flu and hantavirus lung syndrome. Although the cytokine storm is not a disease, it is a serious medical problem that can cause extreme damage, sometimes even leading to organ failure and death.

ArtemiC™ has been tested for safety and efficacy in a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 50 patients diagnosed with COVID-19. In the phase II clinical study, ArtemiC™ statistically improved the recovery of patients infected with COVID-19. All patients had confirmed COVID-19 infection, were in stable, moderate condition in the hospital, and were between the ages of 40 and 75 years old.
